If you've spent any time researching minerals, hydration, soil health, or natural wellness products, you've probably heard two terms:
And:
Humic acid.
You may have also heard some pretty impressive claims.
Some people say fulvic acid improves mineral absorption.
Others say it supports gut health.
Some call it an antioxidant.
And then there are claims about "detoxing" the body, removing heavy metals, dramatically increasing energy, or delivering dozens of minerals directly into your cells.
That's where I believe we need to do what we've been doing throughout this Healthy Aging series.
Slow down.
Separate what we know from what we think.
And separate legitimate research from marketing.
Fulvic and humic acids are fascinating natural substances.
Researchers are studying them.
But they're also a perfect example of why the words "natural" and "scientifically proven" should never automatically be treated as the same thing.
So today we're answering:

QUICK ANSWER: WHAT ARE FULVIC AND HUMIC ACIDS?
Fulvic and humic acids are complex groups of naturally occurring organic substances formed as plant, microbial, and other organic material decomposes and transforms in soil and water.
Together, they are commonly described as components of humic substances.
Fulvic acid generally consists of smaller, more water-soluble organic molecules, while humic acid consists of larger molecules that behave differently depending on acidity and other environmental conditions.
These substances can interact with minerals and other compounds in soil, which is one reason they're important to plant and soil health.
Scientists are also investigating whether purified preparations may have applications in human health.
However, human clinical research remains limited.
FIRST, THESE AREN'T VITAMINS
This is an important place to start.
Fulvic acid isn't a vitamin.
Humic acid isn't a vitamin.
They aren't individual minerals either.
They're incredibly complex mixtures of naturally occurring organic compounds.
They develop during the decomposition and transformation of organic matter.
Think about what happens in healthy soil.
Plants grow.
Leaves fall.
Roots die.
Microorganisms break organic material down.
Over long periods, that material undergoes chemical and biological transformations.
Humic substances are part of that process.
In nature, they can be found in:
Soil.
Peat.
Sediments.
Natural water systems.
Certain geological deposits.
And other environments rich in decomposed organic material.
WHY ARE HUMIC SUBSTANCES IMPORTANT IN NATURE?
Before we talk about supplements, let's talk about soil.
Humic substances play important roles in soil chemistry.
They can interact with:
Minerals.
Metals.
Nutrients.
Water.
Organic molecules.
These interactions can influence nutrient availability and soil structure.
That's one reason farmers and soil scientists have been interested in humic substances for decades.
Healthy soil is incredibly complex.
And humic substances are part of that complexity.
But here's where we have to be careful.
SOMETHING THAT HELPS PLANTS ACCESS NUTRIENTS DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY HAVE THE SAME EFFECT IN HUMANS.
Plants aren't people.
Soil isn't your digestive system.
That's why we need human research.
WHAT IS FULVIC ACID?
Fulvic acid is generally the smaller and more water-soluble fraction of humic substances.
Its chemical composition isn't identical from one source to another.
That's important.
Fulvic acid from one geological deposit may not be chemically identical to fulvic acid from another source.
Processing also matters.
Extraction matters.
Purification matters.
That makes studying these products more complicated than studying something like vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a specific molecule.
Fulvic acid is a complex mixture.
So when someone says:
"Studies prove fulvic acid does this..."
My next question is:
WHICH FULVIC ACID PREPARATION?
That's an important scientific distinction.
WHAT IS HUMIC ACID?
Humic acid represents another fraction of humic substances.
Compared with fulvic acid, humic acid generally consists of larger and less water-soluble organic structures.
Humic acid is especially well known for its ability to interact with minerals, metals, and other molecules.
That makes it valuable in:
Agriculture.
Soil management.
Environmental science.
And increasingly, biomedical research.
Researchers are exploring whether some of these properties could eventually have useful human applications.
But again:
Potential isn't proof.
FULVIC ACID VS. HUMIC ACID
Here's the simple version.
FULVIC ACID
Generally:
Smaller molecular components
Highly water soluble
Remains soluble across a wider pH range
Interacts with minerals and other compounds
Commonly found in liquid mineral supplements
HUMIC ACID
Generally:
Larger molecular components
Less soluble under acidic conditions
Strongly interacts with minerals and metals
Commonly studied in agriculture and environmental applications
Also being investigated for potential biomedical uses
They are related.
But they aren't interchangeable.
WHAT ABOUT TRACE MINERALS?
This is where things get interesting.
Because humic substances naturally interact with soil and minerals, commercial fulvic products may contain varying amounts of mineral elements.
You'll often see marketing statements such as:
"Contains over 70 trace minerals."
Or:
"Provides minerals in ionic form."
Here's what I want you to understand.
The number of minerals detected in a laboratory analysis doesn't automatically tell us:
How much is present.
How much your body absorbs.
Whether the amount is nutritionally meaningful.
Or whether every detected element is desirable.
Detection and nutritional significance are two different things.
That's why I prefer looking at actual laboratory testing rather than impressive marketing numbers.
DOES FULVIC ACID IMPROVE MINERAL ABSORPTION?
This is one of the most common claims.
The theory isn't unreasonable.
Fulvic substances can bind and interact with minerals.
They play important roles in mineral transport within soil and plant systems.
Laboratory and agricultural research supports many of these interactions.
But the question we're asking is different:
Does taking a fulvic acid supplement significantly improve mineral absorption in humans?
Right now, high-quality human evidence isn't strong enough to make sweeping claims.
That doesn't mean it has no effect.
It means:
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH HUMAN DATA YET.
That's an important difference.
ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY
Researchers have investigated the antioxidant properties of fulvic and humic substances.
Laboratory studies suggest certain preparations may influence oxidative processes.
Remember what we discussed earlier this week.
Oxidative stress occurs when the balance between oxidants and the body's antioxidant defenses becomes disrupted.
Researchers are interested in whether compounds within humic substances can interact with these processes.
The research is interesting.
But much of it remains:
Laboratory research.
Animal research.
Or early-stage human research.
So I'm not comfortable telling someone:
"Fulvic acid eliminates oxidative stress."
That's much stronger than the evidence supports.
HEALTHY INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Researchers have also explored whether humic substances influence inflammatory pathways.
Laboratory studies have suggested that certain humic preparations can influence inflammatory signaling molecules and oxidative activity.
One scientific review concluded that humic substances demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties through several possible mechanisms.
A small human Phase 1 trial also evaluated a specific carbohydrate-derived fulvic acid preparation.
The researchers reported no severe adverse events during the short study and observed changes in a skin-prick response consistent with an effect on immediate hypersensitivity.
That's interesting.
But the study was small.
It included only 30 male volunteers initially, and the exposure periods were short.
That's nowhere near enough evidence to say:
"Fulvic acid treats inflammation."
It's a reason for additional research.
Not a reason for exaggerated claims.
WHAT ABOUT GUT HEALTH?
You'll also hear fulvic acid promoted for:
Gut health.
The microbiome.
Digestion.
Nutrient absorption.
Researchers are exploring these areas.
A 2018 scientific review examined potential relationships between fulvic acid, inflammation, oxidative stress, gastrointestinal function, and metabolic health.
The authors also highlighted a major problem:
Modern research has not yet established many of the health claims or standardized dosing recommendations surrounding these products.
That's exactly why I encourage people to remain curious without getting ahead of the evidence.
Gut health is incredibly important.
But proven ways to support it still include:
Eating enough fiber.
Eating fruits and vegetables.
Consuming a variety of plant foods.
Staying hydrated.
Exercising.
Sleeping well.
Limiting excessive alcohol.
And seeking medical care for persistent digestive problems.
A supplement shouldn't replace those fundamentals.
LET'S TALK ABOUT "DETOX"
This may be the biggest marketing word surrounding fulvic and humic substances.
You've probably heard claims that they:
"Pull toxins from your body."
"Remove heavy metals."
"Clean your cells."
Or:
"Detox everything."
I would be extremely careful with those statements.
Yes, humic substances can bind certain metals under particular chemical conditions.
That's well established in environmental chemistry.
But that does not prove that drinking a fulvic supplement safely removes toxic metals from the human body.
Those are two very different situations.
If someone has actual heavy-metal poisoning, that's a medical condition.
It requires proper testing and medical treatment.
Don't attempt to treat heavy-metal toxicity with an over-the-counter supplement.
HERE'S THE IRONY ABOUT HEAVY METALS
This is extremely important.
Because fulvic and humic substances originate from soil, sediment, peat, lignite, or other natural deposits...
the source itself can contain unwanted substances.
Including heavy metals.
In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advised consumers to stop using one company's fulvic products after testing found elevated levels of:
Lead.
And arsenic.
Think about that.
A product someone might purchase because they're interested in "detoxification" could potentially expose them to the exact contaminants they're trying to avoid if it isn't properly sourced and tested.
That's why:
QUALITY MATTERS.
THIRD-PARTY TESTING MATTERS
If I were evaluating a fulvic or humic supplement, I wouldn't simply ask:
"How many minerals does it contain?"
I'd also want to know:
Has the product been tested for lead?
Arsenic?
Cadmium?
Mercury?
Microbial contamination?
Does the manufacturer have appropriate quality controls?
Can they provide meaningful testing information?
Where is the raw material sourced?
Natural products still require quality control.
Sometimes even more so.
WHAT DOES THE HUMAN RESEARCH ACTUALLY SHOW?
This is where I want to keep expectations realistic.
Compared with topics such as:
Protein.
Creatine.
Exercise.
Omega-3 fatty acids.
Vitamin D.
Or blood pressure management...
the human research involving oral fulvic and humic acid supplementation is relatively limited.
There are:
Laboratory studies.
Animal studies.
Small human trials.
Reviews describing possible biological mechanisms.
Toxicology studies of specific preparations.
But we do not yet have a huge collection of large, long-term randomized controlled trials showing broad health benefits.
That doesn't make the research worthless.
It simply tells us where we are on the scientific timeline.
We're still learning.
CAN WE ASSUME EVERY FULVIC PRODUCT IS SAFE?
No.
This is another critical point.
A study showing that one purified preparation was well tolerated does not prove every fulvic product on the market is safe.
Remember:
Different source.
Different extraction.
Different purification.
Different concentration.
Different contaminants.
Potentially different result.
A 2020 toxicological study, for example, evaluated one specific fulvic and humic acid preparation and reported favorable results in laboratory and animal testing.
That's useful information about that preparation.
It doesn't provide a safety guarantee for every product sold online.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR?
If you choose to use a fulvic or humic mineral product, consider these questions:
1. WHAT IS THE SOURCE?
The manufacturer should know where the raw material comes from.
2. IS IT PURIFIED?
Raw soil isn't a supplement.
Processing and purification matter.
3. IS IT TESTED FOR HEAVY METALS?
This is one of my biggest concerns.
4. IS IT TESTED FOR MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION?
Natural materials can carry microorganisms.
5. ARE THE CLAIMS REALISTIC?
Be skeptical of companies claiming their product:
Cures disease.
Removes every toxin.
Reverses aging.
Eliminates prescription medications.
Or treats dozens of unrelated conditions.
Those are red flags.
FULVIC ACID IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR MINERAL-RICH FOODS
This is important for our Healthy Aging After 50 series.
If your goal is better mineral nutrition, start with food.
Mineral-rich foods include:
Leafy greens.
Beans.
Lentils.
Nuts.
Seeds.
Seafood.
Dairy products.
Whole grains.
Fruits.
Vegetables.
Your specific needs depend on your health, diet, medications, and nutritional status.
A supplement may complement nutrition.
It should not become an excuse for poor nutrition.
WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE OVER 50?
After 50, maintaining good nutrition becomes increasingly important.
We want to protect:
Muscle.
Bone.
Heart health.
Brain health.
Energy.
Mobility.
Independence.
Certain nutrients become particularly important, including:
Protein.
Calcium.
Magnesium.
Potassium.
Vitamin D.
Vitamin B12.
And others depending on the individual.
Fulvic products may be interesting additions to someone's wellness routine.
But I wouldn't put them ahead of proven fundamentals.
First:
Eat well.
Exercise.
Strength train.
Sleep.
Hydrate.
Get appropriate medical screenings.
Correct documented nutrient deficiencies.
Then consider supplements based on your individual needs.
MYTHS VS. FACTS
Myth: Fulvic acid contains every mineral your body needs.
Fact: Mineral content varies significantly depending on the source and product. Detecting many elements does not mean they're present in nutritionally meaningful amounts.
Myth: Fulvic acid automatically improves mineral absorption.
Fact: The theory is biologically interesting, but strong human clinical evidence supporting broad absorption claims remains limited.
Myth: Humic substances detox heavy metals from your body.
Fact: Humic substances can interact with metals chemically, but that does not establish an over-the-counter fulvic supplement as a safe or effective treatment for heavy-metal poisoning.
Myth: Natural soil-derived supplements cannot be contaminated.
Fact: Soil-derived products can contain unwanted metals or other contaminants if sourcing and purification are inadequate.
Myth: All fulvic acid products are basically the same.
Fact: Composition varies based on source material, extraction, processing, concentration, and purification.

I'm interested.
I believe the science is worth watching.
I understand why people are excited about them.
But I also recognize that the research hasn't caught up with many of the claims being made online.
So my approach is simple.
Stay curious.
Ask questions.
Demand quality.
Look for testing.
Don't confuse marketing with evidence.
And don't allow any supplement to distract you from the basics that have decades of research behind them.
Eat nutritious food.
Build and maintain muscle.
Stay active.
Drink enough water.
Get enough sleep.
Take care of your heart.
Manage stress.
And work with qualified healthcare professionals when you need them.
Supplements can be tools.
But the foundation will always be your lifestyle.
And remember:
DON'T JUST GET OLDER. GET BETTER AT IT.
