If you spend any time reading about health and wellness, you've probably heard this word:

INFLAMMATION.

Inflammation causes heart disease.

Inflammation causes arthritis.

Inflammation makes you gain weight.

Inflammation damages your brain.

This food causes inflammation.

That supplement fights inflammation.

Reduce inflammation and supposedly everything gets better.

But there's a problem with the way we talk about inflammation.

INFLAMMATION ISN'T ALWAYS BAD.

In fact, you wouldn't survive very long without it.

Inflammation is part of your body's natural defense and repair system.

Cut your finger?

Inflammation helps protect and repair it.

Sprain your ankle?

Inflammation is part of the healing response.

Develop an infection?

Your immune system activates inflammatory processes to help fight the threat.

That's inflammation doing its job.

The problem is when inflammation doesn't resolve appropriately or remains active for a long time.

That's when we begin talking about:

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION.

And chronic inflammation is much more complicated than simply eating one "bad" food or taking one "anti-inflammatory" supplement.

Today, let's separate the science from the hype.

Inflammation is part of the body's normal immune response to injury, infection, and other potential threats.

Acute inflammation develops relatively quickly and normally resolves after the injury heals or the threat has been controlled.

Chronic inflammation persists for much longer—potentially months or years—and can occur when an inflammatory trigger remains, when the immune system becomes dysregulated, or as part of certain chronic diseases.

Persistent inflammation can contribute to tissue damage and is involved in numerous conditions, including cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, and other disorders.

But inflammation is complicated.

It isn't accurate to assume that every disease, pain, symptom, or health problem is simply caused by "inflammation."

FIRST, INFLAMMATION IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN

Let's say you cut your finger.

Within a short period, you may notice:

Redness.

Warmth.

Swelling.

Tenderness.

Those aren't necessarily signs that something has gone wrong.

They're signs that something is happening.

Your immune system recognizes tissue damage.

Chemical signals are released.

Blood vessels change.

Immune cells travel toward the injured area.

Those cells help:

Fight potential infection.

Remove damaged tissue.

Begin repair.

And eventually help restore normal function.

That's an incredibly sophisticated system.

Without inflammation, ordinary injuries and infections could become much more dangerous.

So our goal should never be:

ELIMINATE ALL INFLAMMATION.

We need inflammation.

We just don't want inflammatory processes remaining unnecessarily active.

WHAT IS ACUTE INFLAMMATION?

Acute inflammation is your body's relatively rapid response to an injury, infection, irritant, or other harmful stimulus.

Think about:

Cutting yourself.

Getting a splinter.

Spraining an ankle.

Being stung by an insect.

Developing certain infections.

The classic signs of acute inflammation include:

Redness.

Heat.

Swelling.

Pain.

And sometimes temporary loss of normal function.

Acute inflammation generally has a purpose.

Something happened.

Your body responds.

The threat is controlled.

Repair occurs.

The inflammatory response settles down.

That's the way the system is supposed to work.

WHAT MAKES CHRONIC INFLAMMATION DIFFERENT?

Chronic inflammation is different because the inflammatory response persists.

Instead of:

Threat.

Response.

Repair.

Resolution.

You can have:

ONGOING IMMUNE ACTIVATION.

This can happen for different reasons.

Sometimes the original problem doesn't disappear.

Sometimes the immune system reacts inappropriately.

Sometimes an autoimmune disease causes the immune system to attack the body's own tissues.

Sometimes repeated environmental or lifestyle exposures contribute to ongoing inflammatory signaling.

And sometimes chronic inflammation develops as part of a complicated interaction involving:

Genetics.

Aging.

Metabolism.

Body composition.

Environment.

And disease.

That's why I don't like oversimplified explanations.

There usually isn't one universal cause.

WHAT CAN CAUSE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION?

There are many possible causes and contributors.

These can include:

PERSISTENT INFECTIONS

Some infections can produce ongoing immune activation.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE

Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel disease involve inappropriate or dysregulated immune responses.

LONG-TERM EXPOSURE TO IRRITANTS

Certain environmental exposures can continually stimulate inflammatory processes.

SMOKING

Tobacco smoke exposes the body to numerous harmful chemicals and contributes to chronic inflammatory processes.

EXCESS VISCERAL FAT

Adipose tissue—particularly visceral fat—is biologically active and can produce signaling molecules involved in inflammation.

METABOLIC DYSFUNCTION

Insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and related metabolic abnormalities can be associated with chronic low-grade inflammation.

SEDENTARY BEHAVIOR

Low physical activity is associated with several conditions characterized by chronic inflammation.

POOR SLEEP

Insufficient or disrupted sleep can influence immune and inflammatory signaling.

CHRONIC STRESS

Long-term psychological stress can affect immune regulation and inflammatory pathways.

And these factors can interact with each other.

That's an important point.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION ISN'T ALWAYS SOMETHING YOU CAN FEEL

Acute inflammation is often obvious.

You sprain your ankle.

It swells.

You see it.

You feel it.

Chronic low-grade inflammation can be much less obvious.

There may be no visible redness.

No swollen ankle.

No obvious heat.

No specific sensation telling you:

"Your inflammation level is high today."

Some inflammatory diseases produce clear symptoms.

Others may not initially.

That's why statements such as:

"I'm tired, so I must be inflamed"

aren't medically reliable.

Fatigue has many possible causes.

So do:

Joint pain.

Headaches.

Digestive problems.

Brain fog.

Weight changes.

Sleep problems.

Those symptoms deserve appropriate evaluation when they're persistent.

Don't automatically diagnose yourself with "inflammation."

WHAT DOES AGING HAVE TO DO WITH IT?

This Healthy Aging After 50 series is where inflammation becomes especially interesting.

Researchers sometimes use the term:

INFLAMMAGING.

It describes the tendency toward increased chronic, low-grade inflammatory activity associated with aging.

The mechanisms are complicated and still being studied.

They may involve changes in:

Immune function.

Cellular damage.

Mitochondrial function.

Body composition.

Metabolism.

Gut biology.

And accumulated environmental exposures.

But here's what I don't want you to conclude:

"Getting older means I'm doomed to become chronically inflamed."

No.

Aging influences biology.

But lifestyle, medical care, genetics, environment, and disease also matter.

We can't stop aging.

But we can influence many factors associated with healthy aging.

INFLAMMATION AND HEART DISEASE

We spent the first several days of this week discussing cardiovascular health.

There's a reason inflammation belongs in the same conversation.

Atherosclerosis isn't simply fat clogging a pipe.

It's a complex biological process involving:

Cholesterol-containing particles.

Artery walls.

Immune cells.

Inflammatory signaling.

Plaque development.

And, in some circumstances, plaque disruption and blood clot formation.

Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis.

But saying:

"Inflammation causes every heart attack"

would still be an oversimplification.

Cardiovascular disease involves multiple interacting risk factors.

Including:

LDL cholesterol.

High blood pressure.

Smoking.

Diabetes.

Genetics.

Age.

Kidney disease.

Physical inactivity.

And other factors.

That's why treating cardiovascular disease requires more than simply trying to "reduce inflammation."

VISCERAL FAT AND INFLAMMATION

Here's another reason body composition matters.

Body fat isn't simply stored energy.

Adipose tissue is biologically active.

It produces hormones and signaling molecules.

Visceral fat—the fat stored around abdominal organs—is particularly associated with metabolic abnormalities and inflammatory activity.

Excess visceral fat is associated with:

Insulin resistance.

Type 2 diabetes.

Abnormal blood lipids.

Cardiovascular disease.

And chronic low-grade inflammation.

That's one reason reducing excess abdominal fat when appropriate can improve more than your appearance.

We're talking about metabolic health.

WHAT ABOUT BLOOD SUGAR?

Blood sugar and inflammation have a complicated relationship.

Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes are associated with chronic inflammatory processes.

At the same time, inflammatory signaling may contribute to metabolic dysfunction.

In other words:

It's not always a simple one-way street.

This is one of the most important metabolic concepts to understand after 50.

DOES SUGAR CAUSE INFLAMMATION?

This is where social media gets carried away.

You'll hear:

"Sugar causes inflammation."

That statement is too broad.

Eating one cookie doesn't suddenly create a chronic inflammatory disease.

But a dietary pattern consistently high in:

Added sugars.

Refined carbohydrates.

Highly processed foods.

And excess calories...

can contribute to:

Weight gain.

Insulin resistance.

Poor metabolic health.

And other conditions associated with chronic inflammation.

That's different from saying:

"One teaspoon of sugar inflames your entire body."

Context matters.

Quantity matters.

Frequency matters.

Your overall dietary pattern matters.

ARE THERE "ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS"?

This phrase gets used constantly.

Certain dietary patterns are associated with better metabolic and cardiovascular health and lower levels of some inflammatory markers.

Those patterns commonly emphasize:

Vegetables.

Fruits.

Beans.

Legumes.

Whole grains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Fish.

Olive oil.

And other minimally processed foods.

These foods contain combinations of:

Fiber.

Vitamins.

Minerals.

Unsaturated fats.

Polyphenols.

And other compounds.

But don't turn one food into medicine.

Blueberries aren't going to erase smoking.

Turmeric isn't going to compensate for uncontrolled diabetes.

Olive oil isn't going to replace blood-pressure medication.

Nutrition works as part of the bigger picture.

WHAT ABOUT BLACK SEED OIL?

Since we recently discussed Black Seed Oil and thymoquinone, this is worth mentioning.

Laboratory, animal, and some human research has investigated Nigella sativa and thymoquinone for potential effects on inflammatory pathways and inflammatory markers.

That's scientifically interesting.

But it doesn't mean Black Seed Oil is a treatment for every inflammatory condition.

It also doesn't mean someone with rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, or another medical condition should replace prescribed treatment with Black Seed Oil.

The same principle applies to:

Turmeric.

Omega-3 supplements.

Herbs.

Teas.

Minerals.

And other wellness products.

Supplements may complement an appropriate health plan.

They should not become substitutes for diagnosis and evidence-based medical care.

DOES EXERCISE REDUCE INFLAMMATION?

Regular physical activity is associated with numerous health benefits and can influence inflammatory and metabolic pathways.

But here's another interesting distinction:

Exercise itself can temporarily create an inflammatory response.

That's part of how your body responds and adapts to physical stress.

You exercise.

Muscle tissue experiences stress.

Repair occurs.

Adaptation follows.

Over time, regular physical activity is associated with improved:

Cardiovascular health.

Insulin sensitivity.

Body composition.

Physical fitness.

And regulation of inflammatory processes.

Again:

Not all inflammation is bad.

Context matters.

WHAT ABOUT SLEEP?

Sleep and immune function are closely connected.

Poor or insufficient sleep can influence inflammatory signaling.

And chronic sleep problems are associated with several health conditions.

That's why sleep isn't wasted time.

Your body is doing important work while you're sleeping.

STRESS AND INFLAMMATION

Stress deserves nuance too.

Your body's short-term stress response is normal and useful.

If you need to react quickly to a dangerous situation, you want that system working.

The concern is chronic stress.

Long-term psychological stress can alter hormonal, nervous-system, and immune regulation.

Research has linked chronic stress with changes in inflammatory signaling.

That doesn't mean:

"Thinking positive eliminates inflammation."

It doesn't.

But stress management deserves a place in a healthy lifestyle.

Prayer.

Exercise.

Healthy relationships.

Time outdoors.

Relaxation.

Good sleep.

Setting boundaries.

And addressing problems instead of continually carrying them...

can all be valuable.

CAN A BLOOD TEST TELL YOU IF YOU HAVE CHRONIC INFLAMMATION?

There are laboratory tests that measure markers associated with inflammation.

One commonly discussed marker is:

C-REACTIVE PROTEIN, OR CRP.

CRP is produced by the liver and can increase when inflammation is present.

Another test is:

ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE, OR ESR.

But here's the important part:

These tests don't simply tell you:

"You have chronic inflammation because of your diet."

Elevated inflammatory markers can occur for many reasons.

Including:

Infections.

Autoimmune disease.

Injury.

Certain cancers.

Obesity.

And numerous other medical conditions.

CRP and ESR are nonspecific.

They need to be interpreted within the clinical context.

Don't order a test online, see an elevated number, and diagnose yourself.

Talk with a healthcare professional.

WHAT ABOUT hs-CRP AND HEART HEALTH?

You may also hear about:

HIGH-SENSITIVITY C-REACTIVE PROTEIN, OR hs-CRP.

This test can detect lower levels of CRP and may be used in certain situations as part of cardiovascular risk assessment.

But hs-CRP isn't a standalone "inflammation score."

It doesn't replace:

Blood pressure.

Cholesterol testing.

Diabetes screening.

Smoking history.

Family history.

Or an overall cardiovascular risk assessment.

It's one potential piece of information.

Not the whole picture.

CAN YOU "DETOX" INFLAMMATION?

No.

Inflammation isn't a toxin sitting inside your body waiting to be flushed out.

Be cautious when someone sells:

A detox tea.

A cleanse.

A juice.

A powder.

A supplement.

Or a three-day program...

and promises it will "remove all inflammation."

That's not how the immune system works.

If chronic inflammation is being driven by:

Smoking...

the answer is addressing smoking.

If it's being driven by:

An autoimmune disease...

the answer may involve medical treatment.

If metabolic dysfunction is contributing...

improving metabolic health matters.

Treat the cause when possible.

Don't just chase the word "inflammation."

WHAT CAN YOU ACTUALLY DO?

Here's where I like to keep things practical.

You don't need to spend your life trying to eliminate every inflammatory molecule.

Focus on the fundamentals.

1. DON'T SMOKE

Smoking is one of the clearest modifiable exposures associated with chronic inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

2. MOVE REGULARLY

Walk.

Strength train.

Perform aerobic activity.

And break up long periods of sitting.

3. IMPROVE YOUR DIETARY PATTERN

Eat more:

Vegetables.

Fruit.

Beans.

Whole grains.

Nuts.

Seeds.

Fish.

Lean proteins.

And minimally processed foods.

4. REDUCE EXCESS BODY FAT WHEN APPROPRIATE

Especially excess visceral fat.

5. MANAGE BLOOD SUGAR

Pay attention to prediabetes, diabetes, and metabolic health.

6. PROTECT YOUR SLEEP

Don't continually sacrifice sleep and expect your body to perform optimally.

7. MANAGE STRESS

You may not be able to eliminate stress.

You can improve how you respond to it.

8. LIMIT EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL

More isn't better.

9. TAKE CARE OF YOUR ORAL HEALTH

Chronic gum disease involves inflammation and deserves proper dental care.

10. TREAT ACTUAL MEDICAL CONDITIONS

If you have an inflammatory or autoimmune disease, work with qualified healthcare professionals.

Lifestyle matters.

So does appropriate medical treatment.

DON'T BECOME AFRAID OF INFLAMMATION

This may sound strange after an entire article about chronic inflammation.

But I don't want you afraid of the word.

Remember:

Inflammation helps you heal.

Inflammation helps fight infections.

Inflammation helps repair injuries.

Your immune system isn't your enemy.

The goal is:

APPROPRIATE INFLAMMATION AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME.

Activate when necessary.

Resolve when the job is finished.

That's healthy physiology.

MYTHS VS. FACTS
Myth: All inflammation is bad.

Fact: Acute inflammation is an essential part of immune defense and tissue repair.

Myth: If my joints hurt, I definitely have chronic inflammation.

Fact: Joint pain has many possible causes. Symptoms alone cannot establish that someone has systemic chronic inflammation.

Myth: One inflammatory blood test can tell me exactly what's wrong.

Fact: Markers such as CRP and ESR are nonspecific and require clinical interpretation.

Myth: Sugar instantly causes chronic inflammation.

Fact: Overall dietary patterns, excess calorie intake, metabolic health, and body composition are much more important than blaming one isolated food.

Myth: An anti-inflammatory supplement can eliminate chronic inflammation.

Fact: Chronic inflammation has many possible causes. No single supplement universally treats them.

Myth: You should eliminate inflammation completely.

Fact: You need normal inflammatory responses to fight infection and repair damaged tissue.

It has systems designed to protect you.

Inflammation is one of them.

The problem isn't that your body can create inflammation.

The problem is when inflammatory processes become inappropriate, excessive, or persistent.

So instead of spending all your time searching for the latest "inflammation killer," go back to the fundamentals.

Move your body.

Build muscle.

Eat real food.

Maintain a healthy body composition.

Know your blood pressure.

Pay attention to your blood sugar.

Don't smoke.

Get enough sleep.

Manage your stress.

Take care of your teeth and gums.

Get appropriate medical care.

And use supplements as supplements—not substitutes for the basics.

After 50, we don't need more health hype.

We need better information.

Better habits.

Better decisions.

And consistency.

Because getting older is automatic.

Getting better requires intention.

And remember:

DON'T JUST GET OLDER. GET BETTER AT IT.
